New York, NY – December 12, 2011
- EL AL Israel Airlines placed first in the "Wines on the Wing" airline competition as well as having the Best Airline Security by readers of Global Traveler magazine, which has a readership of business and luxury travelers. The winning white wine was selected by 31 expert judges who are wine connoisseurs, sommeliers, wine shop owners and winemakers. EL AL Vice President, North and Central America, Danny Saadon accepted the award on behalf of the airline in front of hundreds of travel industry leaders.
The winning white wine for the category of “Best International First Class White Wine" is Gewürztraminer, produced by the Carmel Winery, which is located in the northern part of Israel. Gewürztraminer is currently served in First Class on all EL AL flights.
"Earning first place recognition from these discerning judges is certainly an honor," said Danny Saadon, vice president, EL AL Israel Airlines, North and Central America. "We are proud of the many fine Israeli wines served in-flight in all classes of service on EL AL as they represent the cultivated vineyards of Israel that are well-regarded worldwide."
A total of 28 airlines participated in this seventh annual Global Traveler "Wines on the Wing" blind tasting competition and provided 136 bottles of white, red and sparkling wines/champagne. Global Traveler is the only U.S.A. based publication to conduct such a survey.
The Best Airline Security Award was selected via another Global Traveler survey which offered questionnaires to magazine subscribers, online followers, as well as through email and direct mail. More than 36,000 qualifying surveys were received by the magazine for this year’s survey. “The security of our passengers is always a priority for EL AL. We are honored to receive this prestigious award as the best in the business from such a well respected magazine,” said Saadon. This is the fifth consecutive year that EL AL has won this award, the same amount of time the security award has been in existence.
